The son of Frederick Dent Grant and Ida Marie Honoré Grant, he was named for his grandfather, and educated in Austria-Hungary, where his father served as US Minister. Grant was indeed a military man of the highest order, he was also a better president than he is often given credit for.US Army General, he was the grandson of the 18th US President and Civil War Union Army General Ulysses Simpson Grant. Grant made it his priority to forge the states back into a single nation, and Bunting shows that despite the troubles that characterized Grant's term in office, he was able to accomplish this most important task, very often through the skillful use of his own popularity with the American people. His predecessor, Andrew Johnson, had been impeached and the Radical Republicans in Congress were intent on imposing harsh conditions on the southern states before allowing them back into the Union. Grant came to Washington in 1869 to lead a capital and a country still bitterly divided by four years of civil war. But that caricature does not do justice to the realities of Grant's term in office, as Josiah Bunting shows in this provocative assessment of our 18th President. Grant is routinely portrayed as a man out of his depth, whose trusting nature and hands-off management style opened the federal coffers to unprecedented plunder. The most common word used to characterize it is "scandal." ![]() Grant is routinely described in glowing terms: the man who turned the tide of the Civil War, who accepted Lee's surrender at Appomattox the man who had the stomach to see the war through to final victory.

Likewise, people ask, How do you calculate sprinkler pipe size? Start with the pipe section closest to the valve as section #1, and work out to the farthest sprinkler head. This is because the smaller pipe creates more pressure loss due to friction and turbulence as the water flows through it. Contrary to what might appear to be true, forcing water into a smaller pipe REDUCES the water pressure, and hurts sprinkler performance. Likewise, people ask, Can sprinkler pipes be too large? The population of San Jose today is about 140 people. Because it was bypassed by the highway, it was protected it from the usually destructive effects of through traffic An old canal still runs to the north of the town. ![]() Of several settlements made on the San Miguel del Vado Land Grant, San Jose is the most populous and has retained the highest degree in the form of its church plaza and the surrounding houses. Later, when the highway was replaced by U.S. However, it was short-lived and rerouted in 1937. R oute 66 made its way through the village in 1926, probably stimulating the economy. At that time, stockbreeders were forced to search elsewhere for adequate grazing land for their cattle and sheep or abandon this form of livelihood. The village abandonment was further aggravated by the federal government land surveys of the early 20th century, which assigned the common lands of the original land grant to federal jurisdiction and were then fenced in, greatly reducing the public grazing lands. A steady decline in San Jose’s population followed. Once completed, the railroad bypassed San Jose, and traffic along the Santa Fe Trail all but ended. In 1879, the construction of the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad began in New Mexico. ![]() In 1858, a post office was established in San Jose, which has been in operation, intermittently, from its establishment to the present. This traffic became more important after the settlement of Las Vegas, as caravans began to bypass San Miguel and traveling a shorter route directly to San Jose. The stagecoach station was probably located in the southeast corner of the plaza.Īs a result of the trade caravans and stagecoaches traveling along the trail, San Jose prospered and grew in population. The stagecoach route, which crossed the Pecos River ford at San Jose, had regular mail service by 1849 and daily passenger service by 1862. The same year, a passenger stagecoach service was established between Independence, Missouri and Santa Fe. In 1846, during the Mexican-American War, San Jose was chosen as a camping site by General Stephen Kearny as he made his way through the area proclaiming the American occupation of New Mexico. San Jose was under the jurisdiction of Nuestra Senora de Los Angeles church at the Pecos Pueblo until nearby San Miguel Del Vado was made a parish and provided with a priest. In May 1826, permission was granted, by the Bishop of Durango, to erect a church at San Jose. The original adobe homes were built closely together around a square, which could be closed for defense in times of Indian raids. In March 1803, nine years after the founding of San Jose, Pedro Rautista Pino, acting on orders of the governor, partitioned the land to the 47 heads of households of San Jose.Īfter the establishment of the Santa Fe Trail in 1821, San Jose became one of the many stops along the trail in the Pecos River Valley.Ĭhurch in San Jose, New Mexico courtesy Google Maps The residents were joined by Indians of other pueblos, including the more progressive Pecos Indians, who entered into a genízaro status and thus contributed to the depopulation of the Pecos Pueblo. When the Genizaros became unruly in Santa Fe, Governor Fernando Chacon appointed Don Luis Maria Cabeza de Baca to settle them in the Pecos River Valley. The community was first settled by Spanish military personnel and the Genízaro colony of Santa Fe. Genizaros were Indians that did not belong to any tribe, having been captured and sold by the Spanish, educated as Christians, and, consequently, ostracized from their own tribes. This was one of many colonial towns that the Spanish created to serve as buffer zones against hostile Indian raids. When Frederick Douglass spoke in Boston, or when President Roosevelt outlined his Four Freedoms, neither could have imagined the extent to which free expression would change. It’s a question worth asking-and one, from my perspective, with no easy answer.īut what amazes me is that more than 240 years after our founding, and more than 150 years after Frederick Douglass’s stirring defense of the First Amendment, the freedom of speech is still vital to the functioning of our democracy. For example, on many college campuses today, students are testing and contesting where free speech ends and hate speech begins. Of course, free speech is not a panacea and while some speech allows us to confront injustice, there are plenty of instances when our speech can perpetuate injustice and harm. It’s no wonder that Frederick Douglass called free speech the “dread of tyrants.” He knew that, as he put it, “Thrones, dominions, principalities, and powers, founded in injustice and wrong, are sure to tremble, if men are allowed to reason of righteousness, temperance and of a judgment to come in their presence.” Speech and reason are bulwarks against an unjust society. Without freedom of speech, there is no women’s suffrage or March on Washington, no marriage equality or Black Lives Matter or #MeToo movement. Without freedom of speech, we cannot cast our vote or call our representatives. Without freedom of speech, there is no preacher in the pulpit, no defense at a trial. It must come first because our right to speak freely is a prerequisite for all of our other freedoms-and for living in a free society. ![]() Constitution, and why it is the first freedom that President Roosevelt asserted in his iconic speech. This power to remake ourselves is partially why the freedom of speech is enshrined in the very first amendment to the U.S. We can address damages, tear down harmful walls, open new doors, and even restore a crumbling foundation. It was in their eyes, as in the eyes of all thoughtful men, the great moral renovator of society and government." 2 “Moral Renovator”: The power of free speechĪs the phrase “moral renovator” suggests, free speech gives us the tools to repair, update, and improve our society and its principles, the way one might consider rebuilding a home. He said: “No right was deemed by the fathers of the Government more sacred than the right of speech. ![]() In Boston’s storied Music Hall, Douglass delivered his iconic, timeless oration about the incident, and about the importance of the freedom of speech. So he did what anyone who seeks to defend free speech should do: he spoke up. The week before Douglass issued his plea, a meeting was scheduled in Boston to discuss what was, in 1860, a controversial question: “How Shall Slavery be Abolished?” But before the meeting could make any progress, it was “invaded, insulted, captured” by an unruly mob, who sought to silence the abolitionists.Īs Douglass explained, the mayor “refused to protect” the meeting-or the free speech of the abolitionists-and instead, simply cancelled it.īut Frederick Douglass knew the real danger the mob posed was not in their disorder, but in denying their fellow citizens the right to free speech. That line-and that speech-emerged from a rather unfortunate incident. ![]() In December 1860, the great American orator and former slave Frederick Douglass delivered one of his finest speeches, “A Plea for Free Speech in Boston.” In it, he boldly declared that “liberty is meaningless where the right to utter one’s thoughts and opinions has ceased to exist.” When a tracert command is issued, a ping is being sent to each hop along the route. Answer B is correct because if a router is configured not to respond to ping attempts, Request timed out will be displayed and none of the routers which should receive the packets after that one will get them. Answer A is correct because when a router is down it is possible that a Request timed out can be the response listed. They will only process updates with the correct AS number.Ĭorrect answers and explanations: A and B. This helps cut down on the amount of updates being processed by each router. For EIGRP updates to be processed, two systems must share the same AS number. ASesĮIGRP uses AS numbers to determine which updates will be processed by each router. After 16 attempts, if there is no response back, the neighbor will be considered dead and removed from the router's list of neighbors. If a reply is not sent back from one of its neighbors, then EIGRP will start using unicasts to talk to the neighbor. EIGRP will keep a list of neighbors who have replied to the message. When communicating with neighbors, EIGRP will first send out information to its neighbors using the multicast address of 224.0.0.10. RTPĮIGRP uses Reliable Transport Protocol (RTP) to communicate with neighbors. But, after this initial synchronization, only updates will be transmitted between neighbors, not the entire routing table. Once this association is formed, the router and its neighbors will advertise their entire routing tables to each other. It will then try to form an association with them. When a router using EIGRP comes online, the first thing it will do is try to find all its neighbors. Not only can EIGRP store up to six equal paths but it can store up to six unequal paths. ![]() Sign in for Free – When you select this option, first create a username and a password for yourself. ![]() ![]() Both eventually lead to the same ‘Create your account’ screen.
